Engineering Technicians and Technologists Requested to Complete Survey

The Provincial Government is seeking input in the form of a survey in response to a request for Right to Title legislation for the Association of Engineering Technicians and Technologists of Newfoundland and Labrador (AETTNL).

AETTNL is a non-profit, self-governing organization of professionals who have been certified by their peers as having attained a nationally recognized, benchmarked level of specialized post-secondary academic education, practical training and experience and who work with the highest level of ethical standards in the applied science and engineering technology fields.

In its application, AETTNL identified three primary objectives of seeking Right to Title legislation:

  • Quality guarantee – certified technology professionals are assessed based on education, experience and demonstrated ethics and employers have confidence that employees have been vetted and meet labour market needs.
  • Public confidence – protecting professional titles ensures they are only used by certified technology professionals.
  • Enhanced worker mobility – workers in regulated occupations with Right to Title legislation are able to work anywhere in Canada without significant additional training.

Should the application be approved and Right to Title legislation be enforced, there would be no impact on members of AETTNL. Non-members will be required to register with the association to use the following designations:

  • Professional Technologists: PTech, Ptech., P.Tech.
  • Certified Engineering Technologist: C.ET, C.E.T, C.E.T.
  • Certified Technician: CTech, CTech., C.Tech.
  • Applied Science Technologists: AScT, A.Sc.T, A.Sc.T.

For more information or to request access to the survey, please email righttotitle@gov.nl.ca or visit www.aesl.gov.nl.ca/app/index.html. Surveys will be administered from July 10 to August 2, 2019.

“Quality assurance, labour mobility and the employability of skilled workers is essential to creating a strong labour force in Newfoundland and Labrador. The input on this application, through an online survey, will help determine if Right to Title legislation is required.”
