Canadian Technology Accreditation Board (CTAB)
In 1982, a group of technicians and technologists, then exploring the creation of a set of standards for technical educational programs, agreed Canada needed a national technology accreditation program.
The Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists, (CCTT) represented these Technicians and Technologists by forming a committee to undertake the accreditation of engineering and applied science programs across Canada. CCTT was in an ideal position to create Canadian Technology Accreditation Board, (CTAB) because it was able to source the 37, 000 delegates of its provincial constituent members to make up the Board.
Today, CTAB is made up of 16 individuals from both the constituent members, and the Canadian Forces and the Board continues to be a standing committee of the CCTT.
It is through CTAB’s efforts that Canada’s technology standards stay relevant and up-to-date. Technicians and Technologists are the only profession in Canada outside the health professions to have created and maintained national competency-based standards.
Mission
The fundamental mission of the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board is to promote and ensure excellence in technical education across Canada.
The Board fulfills its mission through the National Technology Accreditation Program. National accreditation promotes and fosters a consistent, high quality educational system for technology across Canada.
In cooperation with academia, industry and other associations, the CTAB endeavors to be proactive in refining and adapting the national accreditation process to meet the changing dynamics of Technical education.
Registration in a nationally accredited technology program is a student’s assurance that their commitment of time and resources is a protected investment.

Benefits
Accreditation is an evaluation process of the technology programs of Canadian colleges and other private post-secondary institutions.
National Accreditation measures technology programs against a national standard, and also recognizes and rewards exceptional programs for their outstanding work.
In addition, accreditation stimulates continuous and innovative improvement of technology programs.
A diploma from an accredited program is assurance that the graduate will meet standards for certification endorsed by the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists. Graduates from accredited programs become eligible for registration as Certified Technicians or Technologists upon completion of two years of practical employment experience.
This certification ensures recognition and mobility in the national and international workplace for these highly trained professionals.
CCTT and CTAB - Advancing the Professions of Applied Science and Engineering Technology for the Benefit of Society
General Accreditation Procedure
- A college or technical institute requests accreditation for a particular engineering or applies science technology program;
- The program administrators are given the proper forms to complete and return;
- Upon review and approval, an accreditation team is assembled to visit the school and assess the program under evaluation;
- Every facet of the program is examined. Of key importance are the program outcomes. CTAB bases its evaluation primarily on the competencies of the program graduates; and
- A written report is submitted by the team which conducted the accreditation evaluation. It contains a comparison of the program to the appropriate national standard (s) and includes recommendations for program improvements.
